Chuck "Hawkeye" Coleman

Chuck Coleman (Hawkeye), of Medina, passed away on June 22, 2011 from complications of lung cancer. He was under the care of Hospice of Medina County, and in his last few days was surrounded by friends and family. Chuck was born on January 19, 1953 in Euclid Ohio, and grew up in Brunswick. He graduated from Brunswick High School and the Ohio Center for Broadcasting. Although Chuck was blind since birth, he became an accomplished musician, playing drums and keyboards in a number on bands, most recently with the band, Groovy Shooz. He was also a graduate of The Perkins School of Piano Tuning, and operated Coleman’s Piano Service for twenty-five years. Chuck loved to ride his tandem bicycle, and along with his daughter, Catie, participated in GOBA. Last year, they took on the ambitious project of completing the Pan Ohio Hope Ride, a four-day bike ride from Cleveland to Cincinnati, with the goal of raising money for The American Cancer Society. Chuck was diagnosed with lung cancer in the spring of 2010, and finished his first round of chemotherapy and radiation in June. He was in remission and immediately started training, and at the end of July was able to successfully complete the ride. His inspiring story was featured on the TV news, and in several newspapers. Chuck and Catie hoped to participate this year, and had already begun their fundraising efforts. Late last year his cancer returned and further treatment was unsuccessful Chuck is survived by many family and friends, including his wife, Michelle (Pickett), and children, Cara Coleman, Catie Miglietti (Andrew) of Dearborn MI, and Connor Coleman, his parents, Bud (Ansel) and Marilyn Coleman of Wooster, sisters, Debi Bican (Don) of Chippewa Lake, Jayne Paytosh (Alan) of Wooster, and several nieces, nephews, to whom he was affectionately known as Uncle Chuckie. He is also survived by his guide dog, Cordell, who has been his constant companion of eight years. Cordell and Chuck could be frequently seen walking around Medina and hiking at Buckeye Woods. He took a great deal of pride in the accomplishments of his children, with whom he shared his love of nature, exercise, music, and the Cleveland Indians. Chuck was preceded in death by his grandparents, his stepson, Gary T. Frost, and nephew Lucas Ramsdell. The family will receive friends at 10 A.M. Saturday at the Custer-Glenn Funeral Home, (a member of the Green Burial Council), 2284 Benden Drive, Wooster. The funeral will be held at 11 A.M. at the funeral home with Pastor Thomas Schwartz officiating, after which we will proceed to Foxfield Preserve at The Wilderness Center in Wilmot for interment. Foxfield Preserve is a nature preserve cemetery. As such, it is maintained in as natural a state as possible. It is recommended that visitors wear shoes suitable for walking outdoors.
