David L. Ritchie

David L. Ritchie, age 78, of Fredericksburg, passed away Wednesday, August 31st, 2011 at West View Manor Nursing Center in Wooster. Graveside services will be Saturday, 11:00 a.m. at Apple Creek Cemetery in Apple Creek. Custer-Glenn Funeral Home, 2284 Benden Dr., in Wooster is privileged with serving the family. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the American Heart Association, Canton Metro Office, 4916 Hills & Dales Rd., NW, Canton, Ohio 44708. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at: www.custerglenn.com. He was the son of David W. and Lela (Saurer) Ritchie and was born in Apple Creek on July 30, 1933. He graduated from Apple Creek High School class of 1951. He received his Bachelors degree from Miami University in 1955. He served two years in the United States Army while stationed in Germany. He then received his Masters degree from Miami University in 1962. Dave started his career in teaching at Sterling school in 1955, then resumed it when he returned from the service. He taught at Norwayne school district and was head basketball coach and assistant baseball coach for 6 years. His next teaching job took him to Chardon schools and was head basketball and head cross country coach as well and math teacher and assistant baseball coach. He then went to Streetsboro schools and in 1971 married Vicki (Sutherland). She survives. He then became Principal at Black River Schools and remained there until he went to Wellington Schools and retired from there in 1986. Dave served several school districts after retirement as interim administrator and finally ended his educational career where he started at Norwayne in 1996. Dave loved being with his children whether as a coach or a fan. He was also a great Indians fan and was a member of Apple Creek United Methodist Church of Christ. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Mark David (Angela) Ritchie and Matthew Lee (Anna) Ritchie and grandaughter, Peyton; a daughter, Melissa (Angelo) Gillono with grandsons, Andrew, Angelo and Donivin; a brother, Don (Jackie) Ritchie and numerous nieces and great nieces and great nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents.
