Donald R. "Butch" Strickler

Donald R. "Butch" Strickler, age 71, of Wooster, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, September 23, 2013. Services will be Saturday, 2:00 p.m. at Custer-Glenn Funeral Home with Pastor Mark McCord officiating followed by interment at Apple Creek Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted. Visitation will be Friday from 6 - 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in his name for the 1939 Green Township High School preservation, restoration and conversion to the Green Township Historic Preservation Societry at: www.gthps.org. Words of condolences may be shared with the family at: www.custerglenn.com. He was born in Smithville on December 9, 1941 to Ray E. and Gertrude I. (Hodge) Strickler. As a lifelong resident of Wayne County, he graduated from Smithville High School in 1960 then served his country proudly on Active Duty in the U.S. Air Force, and later in the Ohio Army National Guard. He married Carolene "Carol" Maxwell on November 1984 in Smithville. She survives. He volunteered many years as a first responder with the Smithville VFD and EMT Captain with the Apple Creek VFD. He was well known for his humor and hard work as an employee with The Gerstenslager Company where he retired in 2008 and donated much of his free time with United Way of Wooster. He loved spoiling his dogs as well as calligraphy, woodworking and watching baseball, football and auto racing. Don never missed an opportunity to travel and especially to visit his many children and grandchildren. His favorite thing in life to do was always making his famous pancakes for family and friends. He devoted his life to Christ and church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Keith Strickler of Wooster, Thomas (Jill) Strickler of Delavan, Wisconsin, Diane (Terry) Bailey of Bryson City, N.C., Shawna (Tony) Tecco of Murrells Inlet, S.C., Terry (Teresa) McGeorge of Fredericksburg, Oh., Debby (Richard) Miller of Orrville and Teresa (Randy) Kendall of Wooster; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, Bill Strickler of Smithville and a sister, Donna Eagle of Shreve. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a son, Ray Lynn Strickler, 2 brothers, Larry Dean Strickler and Gary Strickler. He will be sadly missed by all of his family, friends and his pets.
