Dorothy S. Engman

Dorothy S. Engman, age 78, of Wooster, passed away Tuesday, April 7th, 2009 at Wooster Community Hospital surrounded by her loving family following a short battle with cancer. Services will be Saturday, 11:00 a.m. at Custer-Glenn Funeral Home, 2284 Benden Dr., Wooster with Rev. James Watt officiating followed by interment at Wooster Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at: www.custerglenn.com. She was born in Columbus, Ohio on April 29, 1930 to Merle and Lois (Lintner) Sumption. Dorothy was a graduate of St. Joseph High School in St. Joseph,IL. and then from the University of Illinois where she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Education Degree. She married Harry A. Engman on March 24, 1951 in Covington, IN. He survives. They recently celebrated their 58th Wedding Anniversary. She was an elementary school teacher for 6 years in Midland, TX; Owensboro, Ky. and Hopkinsville, Ky. She then taught at Parkview Elementary School in Wooster for 22 years before retiring in 1984. Dorothy was an active member of Oak Chapel United Methodist Church in Wooster for 10 years and served as a Lay-Reader & Sunday School teacher. She was currently a member of First Presbyterian Church in Wooster where she had served as Deacon and then Elder and was involved in the Circle Bible Study. She was a founding member of a local woman's prayer group and was very thankful for over 40 years for the friendships and fellowships that was developed. She enjoyed gardening; was an avid reader; loved to travel with her husband and family; and enjoyed her pet feline companions for many years. In addition to her loving husband, she is survived by a son, Paul (Connie) Engman; grandsons, Joel (Emily) Engman and Josh Engman all of Wooster; a brother, Richard Sumption of St. Joseph, IL.; a step-mother, Yvonne Sumption of Marshall, IN; and a sister-in-law, Bernice (Max) Heller of Huntingdon, PA. She is preceded in death by her parents. The family wishes to thank everyone who sent cards and made calls; Hospice and Palliative Care Of Greater Wayne County; Wooster SubAcute Center; Akron City Hospital and Wooster Community Hospital for the care and concern shown during her illness.
