Carolyn H. Winkler

Carolyn Hope Winkler, age 71, of Orrville, was called to meet her Lord, Monday morning, February 22nd, 2010 at Wooster Community Hospital where she was surrounded by the love of her family and friends following a lengthy illness. Once she knew her kids and Pop would be okay, she could then cross the final items off of her "to do" list. Services will be held Thursday, 11:00 a.m. at Custer-Glenn Funeral Home, 2284 Benden dr., Wooster with Pastor Brad Dews officiating. Friends may call Wednesday, from 5 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior (10:00 - 11:00) to services on Thursday. It was her wishes for cremation to take place. A private family interment of cremains will take place at a later date in the family plot at Maple Mound Cemetery in Creston. She was born on July 30, 1938 in Fairmont, W.Va. to Grover Cleveland and Roxie (Jarvis) Griffin. She spoke fondly of growing up on Harter Hill, before moving to Creston when she was 8 years old. She graduated from Norwayne High School with the class of 1956 and married Delbert Winkler on July 28, 1956. Together they showed us all how love can endure despite adversity. She retired from Rubbermaid in 1995 after 34 years of service and maintained close friendships with many of her former co-workers, who became her closest friends, shopping buddies and traveling partners. She took great joy in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and seemed always to have a child in tow. The escapades of "her girls" or "her boys" always brought a smile to her face and brightened her day. She loved playing card games with "Pop" and the kids. Mawmaw will be sorely missed. She is survived by her soulmate, Delbert Winkler of Smithville; children, Hope (Jeff) Nussbaum of Wooster, Jerry (Anita) Winkler of Wadsworth, and Ryan Winkler of Smithville; grandchildren, Chad, Jason and Kyle Nussbaum, Roxann Matter, Sydney Winkler, Gavin and Morgan Winkler, and Millie Kirkendall; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Corbin, Sabastian, Arayah, Josie, desi, Eve and Isabella. Also surviving are sisters, Ellyn Schafer with whom she made her home, Orpha Anderson and Erma Pitman as well as close friends, Bernice, Clara and Dori. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers, Howard, Brooks, Russ and Millard Griffin; sisters, Lula Cox Hamrick and Lucille Lochey O'Dell and granddaughter, Erika Kirkendall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to be made to Apple Creek Fire Dept. or Central Fire District, P.O. Box 338, Smithville, Ohio or the religious education program at your local school.
